Fireworks, Shape and Measurement

Nursery

This week we watched and listened to film clips of fireworks and shared firework rhymes. The children played musical instruments loudly and quietly and explored moving like fireworks.  At home you could try adding sound effects to stories using household objects.

We have been investigating colour and mixed red and yellow to make orange to create bonfire pictures and enjoyed making and tasting ‘rocket’ fruit kebabs.

We went on a shape hunt outside (looking for squares, rectangles, circles and triangles) and made rocket shape pictures. Perhaps you could go on a shape hunt at home.

Please note that individual photos will be taken in school next Wednesday and remember to return your Home Learning books. We look forward to seeing you at our Learn and Share session on Tuesday.

Reception

This week in maths we have continued to learn about length but have been using standard and non-standard measurements. We used rulers and metre sticks to measure the length of different objects and then placed them in size order. We also used metre sticks to measure objects around the classroom and found things that are longer, shorter or the same length as the metre stick. We also used cubes and conkers to measure how long an object is. This is something you could try at home using small items such as dried pasta.

In literacy we have been talking about Bonfire N ight. The children discussed the fireworks they had seen at the weekend and watched some fireworks on the whiteboard. We talked about how people and pets can stay safe on bonfire night and the children then made firework safety posters.

In phonics we have started phase 3. This week we learnt the sounds j, v and w. We played ‘Buried Treasure’ on Phonics Play and we thought of words with a ‘w’ in them to wake up Monty the Monkey.
